THE SACRAMENTO UNION Sunday, November 4, 1962

Young Comedienne Daughter of Columnist Irving Kupcinet is a popular and distinguished Chicago newspaper columnist and TV personality whose scrivening efforts are sy-dicated around the country a n d who has a host of friends in Hollywood. Karyn Kupcinet is a petite, vivacious brunette actress in Holly-wood. Karyn Kupcinet is the daughter of Irving Kupcinet. IMPORTANT FACT • Is the fact that Karyn is the daughter of Irving important to those publicity conscious people in Hollywood? "It's very hard being the daughter of a celebrity," Karyn assures. "And when he's a news-paperman, everybody thinks you are pulling strings to get ahead in Hollywood. I haven't been guilty of that," she affirms with a level look you'd better believe. Although she's just 21 years old, Karyn has prepared for her craft at Wellesley College and in drama classes in New York: Here, father Irving intruded for the first and only time in her budding career with the insistence that she live at the Barbizon for Women and concentrate on her chosen work. PAYING OFF Attention to her studies is paying off for the pert, wide-e y e d actress as she's fast making a mark in pictures and television. Karyn wisely chose the stage for a solid foundation and, despite her tender years, her credits are ex-tensive. She has appeared in two pro-ductions of "Father of the Bride" with Pat O'Brien; with Joe E. Brown, opposite Linda Darnell in "The Royal Family;" with Peggy Wood in "The Chalk Garden;" with Charles Ruggles in "Jenny Kissed Me;" with Joan Blondell in "The Time of the Cuckoo;" with Darren McGavin in "Picnic," and with Leif Ericson and Jeffrey Lynn in "Anniversary Waltz." THREE MOVIES Karyn has had roles in three movies, most recently with Jerry Lewis in "The Ladies Man," has been featured in a score of TV programs, and had a running role in Gertrude Berg's TV comedy series. Currently, Karyn's flair f o r kooky comedy will be on display this Sunday on the "True" com-edy episode, "The Handmade Private," 9:30 p.m., Channels 10, 5, and 12. TRUE ACCOUNT In this almost unbelievable true account of GI hanky-panky, Karyn plays a not-so-bright Red Cross Canteen gal with a failing memory for names who identifies the boys in khaki by their doughnut preferences. She tabs leading players Jerry Van Dyke and Artie Johnson as "Chocolate" and "Cocoanut." When reading for the role for executive producer Jack W e b b, producer Mike Meshekoff as usual was on hand. Knowing Webb's demands for believability and real-ism in his performers, Meshekoff asked Karyn if she was a method actress. Her succinct reply (a n d it cinched the part)? "No. They're nuts. Most of them are phoney. "There's only one kind of acting; what's best for you."
