Description

Old stone fireplace, Usk castle.

This herringbone stonework is typical of the fireback in a fireplace hearth, of which Usk castle has several examples. Flat stone slabs would be damaged by surface spalling from the heat. Mortared stonework would be corroded by soot & flue tar. A common solution was densely-worked herringbone stonework, with minimal mortar.
