Summary

Description GIF animation of the expansion and contraction of a small region of space. According to the Friedmann-Einstein model, in which the cosmological constant is zero and the universe is closed, the expansion and contraction of the universe are cyclic, beginning with a Big Bang and ending with a Big Crunch. According to thast model, the overall scale R of the universe follows a cycloid curve, in which most of the expansion and contraction occurs rapidly near the beginning and end of the cycle, respectively. The eight galaxies shown here maintain their relative position within the space, like raisins in a rising loaf of raisin bread; in that sense, they're "at rest". Nevertheless, they are moving relative to another, since the space between them is expanding or contracting with time. If there were no interaction between the stars of the galaxies, the galaxies would expand/contract in synch with space; however, each galaxy holds its shape by the mutual gravitation of its stars. However, as the space shrinks to the scale of the galaxies themselves, they too must be compacted.
