Size: 25 cm long Type Horizon and Locality: Early Cretaceous, Yixian Formation (Early Aptian), Lingyuan, Laioning Province, China Type Specimen: SRM 35-3, nearly complete articulated skeleton

The fossil of this primitive bird was first mistaken for a specimen of the related Hongshanornis. It has a toothless robust beak and was a seed eater, thus its name. It was terrestrial rather than arboreal.
