Description Dr. Henry Edward "Ed" Roberts (1941-2010) in his office in 2002. He is best known for designing the first successful home computer, the Altair 8800, and hiring Bill Gates and Paul Allen to write software for it. He sold his company, MITS, in 1977 and retired to rural Georgia. He finished medical school in 1986 and established a practice in Cochran, Georgia.
