Summary

Description
English: Map of occurrences of Polistes gallicus. Source: ZOBODAT (Vespoidea). Gusenleitner J. (2011). ZOBODAT: Zoological-Botanical Database (Vespoidea). In: Species 2000 & ITIS Catalogue of Life: 2011 Annual Checklist (Bisby F.A., Roskov Y.R., Orrell T.M., Nicolson D., Paglinawan L.E., Bailly N., Kirk P.M., Bourgoin T., Baillargeon G., Ouvrard D., eds). DVD; Species 2000: Reading, UK (accessed through GBIF data portal, http://data.gbif.org/datasets/resource/1579, 2014-09-23).
Caution: For Germany, the map is misleading. Polistes gallicus (L.) was discovered only recently as a new immigrant species in a few places in the warmest regions of South-West Germany (Schweitzer et al. 2020). The GBIF database entries (which even go as far up to the North as Schleswig-Holstein, with its considerably different climate) most probably refer to Polistes gallicus auct., the accepted name of which is Polistes dominula (Christ 1791). These database and map data are also in contradiction to the written distribution information on the GBIF page (as of January 2021), where Germany is not listed among the countries where true Polistes gallicus (L.) can be found.
Older German literature is also to be used with caution. See for example Erwin Stresemann: Exkursionsfauna, vol. 2/1, 4th edition 1978 vs. vol. 2, 11th edition 2011, which reflect the "name change" from alleged P. gallicus to P. dominulus.
