Description
Sampler with upper and lower case alphabets, lower case y and z left out; numbers 1-10 also included with girls name below; faded border surrounds alphabets; outer border has floral and leaf pattern down sides and across top, lower border includes a house at center flanked by 2 trees, shrubs and flower plants; overall staining especially top right corner (4 1/4" L x 15/16" W) and on 2nd tree to right of house (1 1/4" x 3/4") ; bottom right corner has a hole (3/4" x 3/8"); threads faded; top left corner dog-eared; donor information suggests maker may have been Barbara Machleith (1808-1893) born in Germany. Thread color Black, Green, Blue & Yellow.; Clarinda Crowel added many duplicate letters, and left some out. The lower case “y” and “z” are missing, but many of the upper case letters are doubled, while others are not. This sampler descended in the donor’s mother’s family. Clarinda used cross stitch, herringbone stitch, and queens stitch to create her sampler.
