Summary

Description
English: Bitterballen are a popular deep-fried Dutch snack. The ones here have been bought frozen and then fried at home. They are made by rolling chilled, flour-thickened beef ragout into balls of around 4 cm in diameter, which are then covered with egg and breadcrumbs. Popularly eaten with mustard, some people also like having mayonnaise with them. They are called "bitterballen" because they were traditionally eaten together with a "bitter", a strong alcoholic beverage which has been spiced with herbs.
