Summary

Description
English: Astronomical quadrant. Willem Janszoon Blaeu. Amsterdam ca. 1610. 6500. Manufactured for Professor Willem Snel van Royen, better known as Snellius (1580-1626). Was used to measure the latitude of Alkmaar and Bergen op Zoom. Using the known distance between the towns he was able to calculate the diameter of the earth. After Snellius's death the instrument was purchased by the University for its observatory. The telescope was added in 1669. In the Museum Boerhaave Leiden.
