Description |
English: Alfred (1811) .... going out of Malta Harbour 12th January 1833 Hand-coloured lithograph. This print is one of a pair of lithographs (only one in NMM Collection). It shows the first landing of King Otho in Greece, with a view of HMS Alfred c1848. The picture shown is inscribed: ‘HMS Alfred (Capt R. Mounsell) bearing the flag of Vice Admiral Hon. Sir Henry Hotham KCB. Going out of Malta Harbour 12th January 1833.’ The ship is viewed from starboard side, with square rigging. Two of the main sails are furled, exposing the island of Malta in the background. She is flying a British Ensign. There are smaller sailing vessels on either side of the ship. In the foreground, there are two small fishing boats with men aboard, one reaching a rocky shore. In the Navy List for March 1833 Henry Hotham is recorded as Vice-Admiral of the Red and Flag Officer in commission in the Mediterranean; the date of his appointment is given as 30.3.1831. In the Navy List for June 1833, he is replaced by Vice-Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm. The Alfred was built of teak. She was broken up in 1865. |
