Summary
DescriptionAdmiralty House Cobh (27775479161).jpg |
I selected this photograph from the catalogue for two reasons, firstly because it is a striking building and secondly because I knew absolutely nothing about it. All that said I am willing to wager that there is not an Admiral to be seen. While those pictured are likely not from the Admiralty, today's contributors suggest that they may have been labourers, gardeners or painters on the house in Queenstown (Cobh) County Cork. We say this because, with thanks to [/photos/129555378@N07/ sharon.corbet], [/photos/chartrouse/ Tom Kennedy1], [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac], [/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall McAuley], [/photos/20727502@N00/ guliolopez] and in particular [/photos/beachcomberaustralia/ beachcomberaustralia], we know that this house was built between 1885 and 1886. And some of the exterior features (dated to 1886) are not yet visible. The discussion below also gives some extra detail (and links to interior photos) of what was the home of the commander of the Coast of Ireland Station....
